Understanding Erosive Esophagitis and Eosinophilic Esophagitis: Two Distinct Esophageal Conditions

While both conditions affect the esophagus, they have distinct causes, symptoms, and treatments. Let's explore these conditions and how our research aims to make a difference.

Erosive Esophagitis

Erosive Esophagitis is a severe form of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) characterized by inflammation and damage to the lining of the esophagus

Causes:

  • Primarily caused by stomach acid repeatedly flowing back into the esophagus
  • Can be caused by a hiatal hernia
  • Can be exacerbated by certain medications, alcohol, and smoking

Symptoms:

  • Heartburn
  • Chest pain
  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid

Treatment:

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid
  • Other medications and over the counter treatments like antacids

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)

Eosinophilic Esophagitis is a chronic, allergic inflammatory disease of the esophagus

Causes:

  • Believed to be an immune reaction to certain foods or environmental allergens
  • Often associated with other allergic conditions like asthma or eczema

Symptoms:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Food getting stuck in the esophagus
  • Chest pain
  • Poor appetite (especially in children)

Treatment:

  • Dietary management (elimination diets)
  • Topical steroids
  • Biologic therapies (e.g., dupilumab for patients 12 years and older)

At Advanced Research Institute, we're conducting a study on Eosinophilic Esophagitis. Our research aims to provide the most accurate data for the FDA to review for drug approval.

By participating in our clinical trials, patients could potentially access investigational treatments and contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge.

If you or a loved one are affected by EoE and are interested in participating in our research, please contact us at 801-409-2040 or fill out an interest form on our website! Together, we can work towards better outcomes for those living with esophageal disorders.

Remember, early diagnosis and proper management are crucial for both Erosive Esophagitis and Eosinophilic Esophagitis. If you're experiencing persistent symptoms, consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and treatment.
